대브 필키는 어렸을 때 주의력결핍과잉행동장애 즉 ADHD와 난독증을 겪었어요. 그래서 선생님들은 수업에 방해가 된다고 거의 매일 대브를 교실 밖 복도에 앉혀 놓았지요. 하지만 다행히도 대브는 그림을 그리고 이야기를 꾸며 내는 걸 좋아했어요. 그래서 복도에 홀로 앉아 있는 시간 동안 개성 넘치는 만화책을 만들었지요. 그때 처음 『도그맨』과 『캡틴 언더팬츠』 이야기가 탄생했어요.대학에서 대브는 그림을 그리고 글을 쓰라고 격려해 주는 선생님을 만났어요. 1986년 영국의 공모전에서 수상을 했고 그 덕분에 첫 책 『The World War Won(이긴 세계 대전)』 을 출판하게 되었어요. 그는 그 뒤로도 많은 책을 썼고 1998년에는, 1994년에 출판된 『Dog Breath(개 입 냄새)』로 ‘캘리포니아 어린이 메달’을 받았고, 1997년에는 『Paper Boy(신문 배달 소년)』로는 칼데콧 상을 받았어요.2002년에 나온 『The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby(기저귀를 찬 슈퍼 베이비의 모험)』는 『캡틴 언더팬츠』 시리즈의 첫 그래픽 노블 스핀오프 작품으로 「USA Today」의 베스트셀러 종합 순위(성인 아동 두 부문 모두 합쳐) 6위에 올랐고 「뉴욕 타임스」의 베스트셀러에도 올랐어요. 그 뒤로 베스트셀러 『도그맨』 시리즈와 『캣 키드 코믹 클럽』 시리즈를 포함해 13권 이상의 장편 그래픽 노블을 지었습니다.대브 필키의 이야기들은 반쯤 자기 이야기를 담고 있으며 우정, 관용, 그리고 선한 마음의 승리를 기리는 보편적인 주제를 탐구하고 있어요.
